The strong suit here is not the town of Manzanillo itself which is located in Colima but the numerous beaches in the area. Manzanillo is the sailfish capital of the world.
The area is reputed to have burried treasure. Some of the notorious pirates who used this shipping center were Drake, Cavendish, Speijelbergen.
In 1862 a steamer sank with a cargo of more than a million dollars in gold and silver.
In 1900 a US expedition recovered a half a million dollars of booty.
The rest may still be there.
Day trip anyone?
Today Manzanillo is Mexico's most important west coast port because of the extensive rail connections to the interior of the country.
It is a shipping center for coconuts, bananas, limes, and avacados from local plantations.
